Mo Gary Levitate to Midnight World Tour, Slam Stadium, Philadelphia 1985.

She/her

Voted best vocal act of all time by Soulstar magazine, Monica Gary was born into humble upbringings in the flatlands of South Dakota. Success arrived via a one-way bus ticket to Detroit and a career break with the teen hit [Gas Pump Attendant] Please Attend to Me.

The titanium-selling Levitate to Midnight album – arranged by Toby London and produced by Pickett Scott – generated a record-breaking seven number one singles and spawned a cortège of successful white music stars waiting in line to duet with Gary.

On her passing, Gary’s most notable friend led tributes in the Washington Ink – “let history record that a nation mourned, a president shed a tear and heaven gained an angel with one hell of a voice”.
